ST JAMES, Jamaica — Authorities have imposed a 48-hour police curfew in the Salt Spring community as they move to curb a recent spike in gang-related violence.
A police source told McKoy’s News that the decision follows a string of violent incidents, including a double murder just over two weeks ago and subsequent shootings that have left residents living in fear, compounded by the challenges caused by Hurricane Melissa.
On Monday, 21-year-old Jodane James, also known as “Sizzla” of Salt Spring, was fatally shot in an alleged confrontation with police. Reports indicate officers were executing a warrant when James reportedly brandished a firearm, prompting them to open fire. He later succumbed to his injuries at a hospital.
The curfew, which began Tuesday, December 2, at 6:00 p.m., will remain in effect until Thursday, December 4, at 6:00 p.m., as police continue operations to restore order in the troubled community.
Authorities say they are determined to reign in gang violence and reassure residents that public safety remains their priority.
