Residents of St James still struggling to recover from Hurricane Melissa are set to benefit from relief supplies donated by the Chinese business community in Montego Bay.
The Fujian Association of Jamaica, with support from the Trinidad Chinese Chamber of Commerce, today handed over the supplies.
“We have about 200 mattresses, 500 cases of bottled water, and we have some sanitising products, tarpaulin, [and] rice to help people who really need it,” said the association’s vice-president, Yansen Li.
“I just want to thank the Chinese community in Trinidad for helping the needs of the Jamaican people,” he added.
Montego Bay Mayor Richard Vernon praised the effort, noting the local business group’s consistent support for residents following the disaster.
“I want to thank the Chinese community in Montego Bay; they have been very proactive where their disaster response is concerned,” Vernon said.
“They reached out to the Chinese community in Trinidad and Tobago… and it will go a far way as we continue to respond to the disaster.”
