Beloved Jamaican Ex-Corrections Officer Fatally Struck by Moped in Queens

QUEENS, NEW YORK — A 68-year-old Jamaica-born man was tragically struck and killed by a moped while standing in a marked crosswalk in Queens on Friday.

 

The deceased, former corrections officer Trevor Lloyd Samuels, was hit at the intersection of East 93rd Avenue and 168th Street. The incident occurred just days before he was reportedly scheduled to travel to Jamaica, where he planned to bring his young daughter to New York for the upcoming Christmas holidays.

 

According to reports, Samuels suffered a head injury during the collision. The moped was reportedly traveling the wrong way at the time of the accident.

 

The driver, 26-year-old Yunio Buleje Rodriquez, remained at the scene until authorities arrived. He has been charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, and the investigation is ongoing, police said.

 

Samuels had moved to New York approximately 20 years ago after a long career as a corrections officer in Jamaica. His family described him as a devoted father and grandfather, a “beloved patriarch” whose life was defined by service, resilience, and love.

 

His eldest daughter, Kievette Samuels, recalled the moment she received news of her father’s death. “When I heard the knock at the door, I wondered why he was knocking, since he always had his keys,” she said, noting that police arrived shortly after with devastating news that “shattered” her world.

 

Most recently, Samuels worked as a home health aide, continuing his lifelong commitment to helping others. In a condolence post on social media, his family remembered him as “a proud Jamaican whose life was defined by service, resilience, and love for his family. His professional life reflected discipline and commitment, while his personal life was filled with warmth, wisdom, and devotion.”

 

The family added that he cherished his role as a father and grandfather, and his presence was always a highlight at family gatherings.

 

The Queens community continues to mourn the loss of a man remembered for both his professional dedication and his unwavering devotion to family.
