Abuja, Nigeria — The Nigerian government has successfully secured the release of 100 schoolchildren who were abducted from St. Mary’s Catholic School in Papiri, Niger State, last month, officials confirmed on Monday, December 8.

The children, aged between six and seventeen, were taken during a raid on the school by armed assailants on November 21, 2025, which left dozens of students and teachers in captivity. The attack was widely condemned internationally as a serious violation of children’s rights.

Authorities said the released children were handed over safely to state officials and are being reunited with their families. They will receive medical care, psychological support, and counseling to aid their recovery from the ordeal.

Despite the release, about 165 children and some staff remain missing, as security forces continue search operations in forests and surrounding communities. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but the government has intensified tactical operations and intelligence efforts to secure the remaining abductees.

Parents of the rescued children expressed relief and gratitude to the authorities. UNICEF also welcomed the development, urging continued action to bring all missing children home safely.

The Niger State government confirmed that additional security measures are being put in place at schools nationwide to prevent similar incidents in the future.
