ST ELIZABETH, Jamaica — A man believed to be of African nationality has died after being shot during a robbery in the usually quiet community of Billy’s Bay, Treasure Beach, early Friday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Mazola WA Mwashighadi, reportedly a visitor from an African country.
According to police reports, the incident unfolded around 12:20 am, when Mwashighadi was attacked and shot during what investigators say was a robbery attempt in the area. Residents reportedly alerted authorities after hearing explosions.
The injured man was rushed to the hospital, but despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries.
Police are continuing investigations into the shooting as concerns grow about the recent uptick in violent robberies across the parish.
