Workers at Excellence Oyster Bay Resort in Coopers Pen, Trelawny, walked off the job this morning, escalating ongoing labor unrest in Jamaica’s hospitality sector.
The line staff, including bartenders, room attendants, and waiters, are protesting over low wages, lack of overtime pay, and the prevalence of short-term contracts that undermine job security.
One worker, who requested anonymity, described the financial strain under current conditions.
“We are paid $30,000 for two weeks’ work, no overtime even when we work 10 hours per day. Our contracts only last for three months. Management pays us no money when we complain,” the worker said.
A room attendant, highlighted the challenges of her role, sharing that she is responsible for maintaining 13 rooms daily while earning minimal tips.
“The guests tell us that management tells them we are well paid so they don’t have to tip us,” she claimed.
The protest at Excellence Oyster Bay follows similar actions at other resorts across Jamaica in recent weeks, as hospitality workers press for improved wages, better working conditions, and greater job security.
The strike adds to mounting pressure on hotel management and industry leaders to address the grievances of workers who play a critical role in the country’s vital tourism sector.
As the strike continues, both workers and union representatives are calling for immediate dialogue with management to resolve the issues and ensure fair treatment of employees. Industry observers are closely monitoring the situation, as disruptions could impact Jamaica’s reputation as a premier tourism destination.
