ST ANDREW, Jamaica — Fifty-year-old Janet Baker was shot and killed in a drive-by attack on Park Lane, off Red Hills Road, late Sunday, police report.

The incident occurred shortly after 9 p.m. during a bingo ‘round-robin’ event. Investigators say a car pulled up, and its occupants opened fire, hitting Baker, who was later pronounced dead at hospital. The vehicle fled the scene.

Detectives from the St Andrew North Police Division combed the area for evidence. Authorities have imposed a 48-hour curfew on Park Lane and 100 Lane, effective 6 p.m. Monday to 6 p.m. Wednesday, citing the risk of retaliation and ongoing gang conflicts.

The St Andrew North Division reported a 56% reduction in murders as of November 29, compared to the same period last year, though robberies and break-ins have increased. Police are urging anyone with information about the shooting to contact the Constant Spring Police Criminal Investigation Branch.

Residents say gang violence has long plagued the area, affecting businesses and daily life, and fear the latest killing may spark further violence.
