Transport Authority Cracks Down on Fare Hikes Following Hurricane Melissa

Kingston, Jamaica – The Transport Authority has prosecuted numerous public passenger vehicle operators and seized over 50 vehicles in a crackdown on bus and taxi drivers who have increased fares following Hurricane Melissa.

 

Commuters have taken to social and traditional media to complain about the sudden hikes. One woman told our news centre that on the route from Linstead, St. Catherine, to downtown Kingston, bus fares have doubled.

 

Ralston Smith, managing director of the Transport Authority, warned that serial offenders risk having their licences revoked. He stressed that the measures are meant to protect commuters and ensure that fare structures are strictly followed.

 

The Transport Authority has vowed to continue enforcement until all operators comply with the regulations.
